In our Tuesday TalkAbout Live! masterclass today, we explored the human rights landscape for Australian recruiters. Along the way, we discussed eight actions that recruiters could take to address the risks of modern slavery and adverse human rights impacts in their operations and supply chains.
Here are the eight actions we discussed:
Understand the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights & how they apply to their work.
Create a policy that aligns with the UNGP.
Examine the potential human rights impacts of their operations.
Train all employees, especially those selecting candidates and dealing with clients, to understand the company's commitment to human rights.
Talk with stakeholders to understand their views on human rights issues.
Take steps to help remedy adverse impacts.
Be open about their efforts to respect human rights.
Ensure operations respect human rights and promote respect for human rights among business partners.
Of course, it might not be possible to undertake all eight actions all at once. Planning is important to make sure that your efforts are well directed.
But which ones do you think it would be easiest to implement?
What would be most effective?
What would encounter the most resistance; and how would you overcome it?
It was a valuable discussion amongst the small group of masterclass participants, and one that I hope might lead to further engagement with this topic.
